The story of how the Chinese were treated when they first came in large numbers to the United States in the 19th century is, sadly, filled with racism and contempt - despite their contributions in helping to build the first transcontinental railroad, for example. Part of that larger process was how they were portrayed in the mainstream press, but also in some of the leading Protestant missionary periodicals of the day.
